Hey guys.
So next month im going to be doing an IR set in the studio (yep it can be done)
Ive found that without converting my d200 its just not sensitive enough so i thought id shoot IR film instead.
I already have a Cokin IR (89B) filter but looking for the best and cheapest IR film.
I have of course seen Kodak High Speed Infra Red (HIE) but since kodak are no longer making this film prices have gone way too high.
Hence i was thinking of using Ilford SFX 200, while this film isnt actually a true IF film ive seen some good landscape work with it and the 89B filter.
My question is does anyone know exactly how many stops the 89B will reduce my exposure?
When im in the studio i usually use my 85 and 50mm f1.4 primes and usually use ISO100, 1/160 and about f8. In terms of exposure im guessing that shutter speed is out the window here as its studio strobes. Should i be using f1.4 which is 5 stops. Id rather bump up the film ISO to perhaps 400 so that i can use an apperture of f2.
I do however have the option of using more lights, the studio is quite well equiped so i could double up lights in the lighting rig and use them on full power, probably about f32 in terms of light output.
Any thoughts?
p.s. In case your wondering the kodak film is about £17 where as the illford is only £4.99.
Cheers.

Well I have nothing to add to this but I'd like to know the answer. If I ever shoot IR film I'll have to use my wife's Pentax since my camera is incompatible with IR film because it uses an IR light to sense the film notches. |

You'll have to do some hard searching. Kodak has stopped color IR film and I believe they are or have stopped producing B&W IR film.
Do a search on B&H or Adorama and see if Ilford is available. There is talk about some other company taking up the production from Kodak but it's just a rumor at this point.
Anyone who has some is hording it in their freezers at this point.
Ok, I just noticed that this is from 2005 so I would assume they have worked out their shoot by now...... LOL |
