I got a new lens, the Sigma 24-70 F/2.8, for my Nikon D50. In taking some test shots in low light, I am a little disappointed. Under lamp lighting (three 40 watt bulbs) I had to bump the ISO to 1600 and shoot at 1/20 sec to get a proper exposure at f/2.8 I feel like that is not good enough.. Am I expecting too much? Thanks for any help... I have 4 more days to decide if I am going to keep the lens or get a refund! |

if you still have your old lens, do a quick check with the same lighting and setup @ f5.6. The shutter speed should be 1/5th of a second with ISO 1600. If this is the case, there's nothing wrong with your new lens. It's just what is needed with that amount of available light.
Remember that going from f5.6 to 2.8 is only 2 full stops. Don't expect miracles. |

Thanks for your response ryguy76. I had a chance to do some more indoor shots over the weekend at a child's birthday party and the lens performed well. I had to use a higher ISO (800-1600) on some of the shots but I was able to get suitable shutter speeds to freeze the action. I guess the lighting I described in my previous post was just to dim. |
