Getting my images in order

Hi, I am having to install another hard drive onto my PC as the old one is just about full. I also have an external HD which I also use to store a copy of my images.
My trouble is when I first started to use a pc I didn't know much about how to save the images I took, so consequently they are all over the place & some have several copies in different folders.
Can anyone help me out with a program that will automatically sort the images in the order they were taken or is the only way to do it is by checking each folder in turn.

In windows you can sort photos by the "Taken" date in the photo's EXIF.
