After debating between the Canon 17-55mm 2.8 and the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 I decided to go with the Tamron. It received very good reviews and at $650 less than the Canon, it seemed like a good idea. Well, I am not impressed with this lens at all. It seems as though the outside focal points on my 30D are unable to auto focus. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem with this lens or another? Any recommendations? Should I abandon this lens and go for the canon? I can not rely on an unreliable lens. Are there any other tests that I can conduct or adjustments that can be made to assist the AF?
Thanks,
Sarah |

I owned one of these a while back but don't recall having the problem you describe. Was the subject in low light? I sold my copy because of this lenses problem focusing on low light subjects (that and the noise it makes while focusing).
(I replaced my Tamron with the Canon EF-S 17-55 IS and it is excellent.) |

Thanks for the reply, I think I am going to sell it and try to stick with canon lenses only. I don't think it is exclusively a low light situation because now it is having trouble with another focal point and the lighting is fine. I don't like having a lens that I have to doubt. Tamron said I can send it in for service so I guess I will do that to see if it is saleable. I just used my new canon 70-200 2.8L IS last night on a shoot and what a difference! I think I am in love with it! It was a little heavy but worth it. If the tamron is saleable, where is the best place to sell equipment? B&H, ebay?
Thanks again! |
