I'll be in the GSMNP in two weeks to see the colors (I hope). What location tips can you give me?
Thanks. |

Look up Townsend, TN. Its on the south end of the park and near the Cades Cove Loop. This is a 10 mile auto loop through and bunch of old homesteads. You often see a great deal of wildlife if you go in the morning or at dusk. They used to close the road to cars on Saturday mornings, so you could take a bike. Its often crowded. There is a nice easy trail there as well that takes you to Abrams falls.
Townsend is less crowded than Gatlinburg, and has a few hotels. You can get there quickly by going south in Knoxville, through Marysville.
I got my M.S. at U of Tenn in 1996, and I miss the smokies a great deal since leaving for Iowa. |

Also look up Falls Creek Falls. Its in Pikeville which shouldn;t be to far out of your way. Its not in the Smokies, but its pretty cool. |
