I'll be in the GSMNP in two weeks to see the colors (I hope). What location tips can you give me?

Thanks.

Look up Townsend, TN. Its on the south end of the park and near the Cades Cove Loop. This is a 10 mile auto loop through and bunch of old homesteads. You often see a great deal of wildlife if you go in the morning or at dusk. They used to close the road to cars on Saturday mornings, so you could take a bike. Its often crowded. There is a nice easy trail there as well that takes you to Abrams falls.

Townsend is less crowded than Gatlinburg, and has a few hotels. You can get there quickly by going south in Knoxville, through Marysville.

I got my M.S. at U of Tenn in 1996, and I miss the smokies a great deal since leaving for Iowa.

Also look up Falls Creek Falls. Its in Pikeville which shouldn;t be to far out of your way. Its not in the Smokies, but its pretty cool.
