If you use the lightness channel from lab mode, you are able to apply a higher level of sharpening without severely degrading the image. There is a huge discussion on sharpening your images in RGB vs. Lab Color mode and the loss of information when converting between two color gamuts.

Well, there is a way you can apply USM sharpening technique in RGB mode to only luminosity channel... without converting between two color modes

1. Open your image (fallow your work flow before sharpening is applied)
2. Go to filter>>sharpen>unsharp mask (use what ever setting you like or works best for you)
3. Apply filter
4. Go to edit>>fade unsharp mask (enter the desired opacity and from the mode drop down menu, scroll all the way down and select LUMINOSITY)

This tutorial is relevant to Adobe Photoshop.

Hope that helps out with sharpening... Thank You

Alen
