Hi all,

Recently, I bought a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens and its been superb. However, I picked it up today and tried to use manual focus, whilst it worked, it was very rough... autofocus is also a lot rougher too. Focusing works fine it just doesn't feel "right". Now, it doesn't feel like there is gravel or anything stuck in it, it kinda "clicks" when I turn it!

What should I do - send it back and get a new one or keep it?

Thanks in advance!

well you definitely do not want to keep it if it is acting "sub-par". If you have only had it for a while it should be covered by Canon's warranty, so that would be your first route to send it back to Canon if you can be without the lens for a couple weeks.

otherwise, bring it to the local camera shop and see if they can have a look at it?

Your best bet would be to send it to Canon, as a brand new lens if it is truley malfunctioning would be the best solution.

Thanks! I emailed the shop I got it from but have yet to hear back from them. Would it be better doing the deal through Canon or the shop?

The lens is about 2 weeks old.

Less hastle for you would be to deal through the shop because they will then deal with Canon instead of you. Also it is there job to keep you happy, so if one of their lenses malfunctioned and you are not happy about they should try and keep you happy so either A) a fast replacement from Canon or B)a new one from the store or C)a discount or gift card etc..etc..so I would say go to the store.

The only way I would say deal with Canon yourself is if you bought the lens online at a store or something like that. I've heard many horror stories from people trying to deal with Canon themselves and having it be months before they get their same lens back or sometimes a replacement.

Hope it all works out!

I bought it online... :S

Though I think they have outlets in England, though thats probably a bit far to travel!

Oh well, I'm waiting for the (online) shop to reply to me!

There is no question that your lens has got damaged! There is only one thing to do, bring it back to Canon!
