What I like to do is look at other people's shots, but still do my own thing, it inspires me. If that makes sense.

Comfort of your subjects along with composition seems to work for me. Small children seem to do better leaning into a parent as opposed to standing/sitting alone. However, every family is different. I'm picturing a portrait of a small family. Larger families I treat like sports teams. Row1, Row2, etc...

It depends on how many people are in the family.

I recently did a group of 9. Grandparents as one group, one son/wife & child as another group, then second son/wife & children as a third group. Then I made diamonds or triangles with all their faces.

There are some great posing books out there. One by Mark Cleghorn is quite good.
