Hello I was thinking about buying a used lens from Adorama Camera. First I would like to know if anyone has ever purchesed a lens from there, and second, can anyone tell me about these lenses that I'm thinkg about buying. All of them are suppose to be in excellent condition.

Nikon 28-200 3.5/5.6 Af-d *72 W/hd $199

Tamron 28-200 3.8-5.6 Xr F/nikon Afd $114

Nikon 28-200 3.5/5.6 Af-g Edif $259

Tamron 28-300 3.5/6.3 F/nk-af $144
Tamron 28-300 3.5/6.3 F/nk-af Ld-if Bx $154

Tamron 28-300 3.5/6.3 Xr F/nk-afd W/bx $209

In like for like sizes Nikon will be better than Tamron IMHO

It is generally accepted that wide ranging Zoom lenses are a compromise and that quality suffers.

Of the lenses listed I think the best quality one would be Nikon 28-200 3.5/5.6 Af-g Edif $259 .

However, if cash allows I would suggest an 18-70mm Nikon and a 70-300mm Nikon (the VR if funds allow)

Hey I read somewhere that the Vr doesn't work with the D50's, is this true?

Is the 18-70mm lens considered a zoom lens? and if so why?

AFAIK VR works with all the DSLRs.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A zoom lens is a mechanical assembly of lens elements with the ability to vary its focal length (and thus angle of view), as opposed to a prime lens which has a fixed focal length.

So by definition as this lens can be changed from 18 to 70mm it is a zoom lens.

I think you are confusing the term with telephoto

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In photography and cinematography, a telephoto lens is a specific construction of a long focal length photographic lens that places its optical centre outside of its physical construction, such that the entire lens assembly is between the optical centre and the focal plane. A regular lens of a focal length that is longer than what is considered a normal lens is not necessarily a telephoto lens. A telephoto lens has to incorporate a special lens group known as a telephoto group (see below); nevertheless, non-telephoto lenses of long focal length are often informally referred to as telephoto lenses. The angle of view created by a telephoto lens is the same as that created by an ordinary lens of the same specified focal length.

And just to make things even more difficult a telephoto lens may be a 'prime' or a 'zoom'

I recently bought a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 used from Adorama. It came without the hood and when I called them they said they didn't have it in stock. So they let me buy it from B&H and reimbursed me the $20. So used from Adorama is excellent.

I also have the "Tamron 28-200 3.8-5.6 Xr F/nikon Afd". It is cheap, but I've got many really good pics with it. It stays on the camera most of the time for its nice "walk around" range.

Yes Nikon makes better glass, but not all of us have money for it. Tamron makes decent lens for those of us without big budgets.

Hello everyone, well after a lot of researching I went ahead and brought an Nikon 70-300 with the VR, and so far so good. The only thing that I don't like is the fact that I have a Kenko 2X teleconverter, and my auto focas dosen't work at all on my Nikon when I have this converter on with it.

Well done, a very good all round lens.

The lens is f5.6 at 300mm which is usually the limit for AF to work, adding a 2x TC makes that f11, at that AF, no chance.
However I have a Kenko Teleplus PRO300 1.4x TC and that does work with the lens. Makes it f8 which is officially outside the AF range but it is OK.
That will extend your 300mm to 420mm which is useful.

If you have not made your purchase yet I would forget about Adorama and have a look at KEH. Their prices are better and the quality is higher for a given rating.
