Hi all,
I've read a little about the whole Nikon/Adobe flap, and have seen a C program called dcraw that converts RAW files, but that's a command-line tool. I've also seen Capture One, and tried the trial version, but it didn't recognize the Nef files--and even if it did the price is way to steep.
My question is--is there a cheap (~30-50 $US) piece of Windows software that will not only convert the D40x version of RAW, but do some decent sharpening and other basic post-processing tasks?
I'm no pro, I just want some easy, basic processing.
Thanks for any info...

Or even Photoshop Elements (~$80).
Others I have tried:
1. Nikon Capture NX: $129, great program with batch processing and many other editting capabilities
2. Bibble light: $69, great program with batch processing
3. Capture One LE: $99, great program, gives license for 2 PCs
4. Raw Shooter Essentials: free (probably not updated for D40)
5. DXO Optics PRO: not sure on price, but I think it is >$150, great lens correction, a little confusing to use.
My pick as best bang for you buck would be Bibble (www.bibblelabs.com) |

I use ULead PhotoImpact, I don't believe that has a plugin for NEF/Raw. I guess I'll give Bibble a try. I did try Capture One LE, and that wouldn't even show nef files in the browser, so I don't think that one cand do those. Are you sure Bibble does the D40x NEF? I ask because I've read that Nikon is working overtime to make each new model's Raw format different from the last, presumeably to keep these 3rd party programs from being useable.
Thanks,

Yes, Bibble supports the D40x as of version 4.9.8 (the latest). I use the "pro" version for all of my photography and it does a great job, in my opinion.
