Hi all,
I'm a bit confused by Tamron's Di and Di-II lens designations.

They say the Di-II are designed for smaller sensors (24x16mm), and my D40X has 23.7x15.6 sensor. Does this mean that *only* the Tamron Di-II lenses will work with the D40x, and the regular Tamron Di lenses *won't* work? Or will the Di lenses, specifically the Tamron28-75mm XR-Di unit I've been looking at also fit, and will that work well?
Thanks,
--Jim

Im not sure about tamron AF

if its a Nikon F mount it will work

I think the Di stands for Digital crop sensor Camera and since you will be using it in D40x it should be fine

now the main question is, does it have it's own motor drive?

cause the D40x doesn't have a screw driven AF thus needinng to be an AF-S lens to be able to use the AF system otherwise you will end up focusing manually

AF = Auto focus driven by the screw on the Camera Body and D40 and D40x doesn have this

AF-S = Auto Focus with silent wave motor have it's own motor to Focus

with Tamrom you have to make sure that it has it's own motor in able to Auto Focus Otherwise you need to do a Manual Focus

adorski,
Thanks, I guess it should work then. Tamron's site has another designation in the name, an "IF" for internal focusing, so I'm thinking that's an internal focus motor.

AFAIK I think only Nikon AF-S and Sigma HSM work with the D40/D40x
but you might want to double check that

if you want a fast lens with a wide aperture it will cost you a lot

I've read and see some sample from 18-55 the 2nd version pretty nice and match it with the 55-200 new one too with a VR on it cost like $269

I do wish nikon will release a fast prime lens with SWM a.k.a. AF-S on it

Ok, I just found out that those Tamrons are for AF-D mount, which is apparently the one with the focus drive pin in the mount, and won't fit the AF-I or AF-S, which is what will fit the D40x. The tamron site had said 'IF' for internal focusing, but that may mean that the barrel doesn't turn--it just twists internally?

Anyway, does anyone have a lens recommendation--I want a zoom range anywhere in the 20's up to 70's or 80's, and an aperture < 3, and of course a high quality. I really would like to keep price <$400 US, but maybe that's not possible.

do you need a fast lens?

cause if you do the AF-S with a fast lens aperture is kinda pricey
otherwise as I've said

18-55 II and 55-200 VR is just right for your D40

otherwise here are the links for a current Nikkor Lens
