I am finally converting to the digital world. I have narrowed my search to the Canon EOS Rebel XT 8.0 MP---Canon EOS Rebel XTi 10.0 MP--- and the Nikon D80. Most of them come with an 18-55 lens. I am looking to purchase another lens for some soccer games. Some of the games are in the daytime and some at night. I was looking at the Sigma and Tamron. Because of the price. What would be my best lens for what I am planning on doing? From what I have read I might want to keep it under the 300mm range because of speed. What do you think of the Tamron 18-200 mm AF F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II Digital SLR Lens ? I want to buy a good lens. But after my camera purchase, a chunk of my funds will be used up. So, if you have any input on a lens ou there that would serve my purpose I would greatly appreciate it. |

You should be ok in bright daylight with that lens, but for lower light and for the tack sharp action stoppage, you will want a faster lens, something 2.8 or better (lower numbers = better/faster). |

true, but F2.8 at that focal length is probably beyond the means of someone just starting out in photography.
I wouldn't go for the 18-200 for any sort of sports. For a similar price you can get the Sigma 70-300 APO. It is still not a fast lens, but it gives you a little more reach and it's faster than that 18-200. Also since it's zoom range is shorter the 70-300 is likely to be a better lens in terms of image quality. |
