i have a canon 350d and a 430ex flash. i'd like to begin using it off camera and there seem to be endless options. i read strobist, but can't seem to find the answer i'm after.
would these two items be what i'd need to get the flash off the camera?

You may be better off with something like this as it keeps the full e-TTL functions available to you.

These are a couple of items that I have had good luck with, and you would still keep all of your dedicated functions, like singlemalt stated.

I've gone all "strobist" in two different ways.
1.Using the on board (set to lowest power) to trigger your flash with this attached to the flash(http://www.adorama.com/FASE.html?searchinfo=hotshoe%20slave&item_no=15)

2. ebay radio slaves. (http://stores.ebay.com/Gadget-Infinity_Digital-Camera_Flash_Wireless-Trigger_W0QQfsubZ2214405)
I use the hot shoe version with Nikon units, but I here that some have trouble with Canon units. So you may want to try the non-hotshoe versions and just get the correct adaptor to make the connections
