I recently purchased 2 AB400 strobes with umbrellas along with a few musling backdrops to use in a small studio set up in my home. So far I'm very pleased with the results I'm getting. Seeing as how I'm not using my existing 580ex with the AB units currently I'm wondering what possible ways I could put it to good use.
Would it be possible to set up the 580 as a hairlight or background light?
Or, do you have any other suggestions? |

Unless you are only doing studio stuff I would think that things like birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, weddings school functions etc would call for a flash unit.
You could also use it as a back light. It will however be slow to recover compared to the AB's. |

I have a similar setup and use a hotshoe slave (~$16 at adorama) with my speedlight and set it as a hairlight with dark backdrops, and as a second background light when using a white backdrop. |

It would be a good get well present to send me. I would graciously take it off your hands for you. It would be in excellent care. I know you want to send the flash to me.

This does work just fine but I would recommend saving that 580 for on camera stuff. If you want a hair light pick up another strobe. You can get by with a lower wattage strobe because the strobe is closer to the subject and you dont need it be as bright. |

It didn't work. I had to fork over $400 for my own flash. |
