Hi, I am planning to purhase a canon 400D (this will be my first dslr). The kits comes with a EF-S 18-55mm lens. I would like to get a better lens and also a wide angle lens. What would you recomend?

Thanks :)

That would depend, what kind of photography are you interested in? Landscape, portrait, urban, photojournalism? Tell us what you want to do and you will get some recomendations.

The 18-55 is a wide angle lens, although the 18 end only provides the same angle of view as a 28mm on a full frame camera. As this is your first DSLR I would suggest just using the kit lens to start with and see how it performs.
Although technical data may suggest it isn't the greatest lens in the world doesn't mean that you will see any problems. That will depend on what it is used to produce.

For a wide angle, your best bets would likely be the Canon 10-22 or the Tokina 12-24. For a lens to replace the 18-55 I hear good things about the Sigma 17-70. You'll probably want to get a telephoto as well...a good starter telephoto is the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO DG Macro.

if you are immediately going to replace the 18-55, why buy it in the first place. See if the dealer will do you the 400D body only.

The Sigma 18-50 F2.8 macro is supposed to be a pretty good standard zoom, I have my eye on one for when the Pentax 16-50 finally comes out and I know for sure I can't afford it.

Lens choice is very dependant upon the type of photography you are planning on doing. So as mentioned, play with the kit lens for a while until you get a feel for what you 'miss' about it (not wide enough, not long enough, not high enough quality, max aperture not big enough, etc.) Then you can better define your specific needs which will steer you toward a specific lens.
