While I was on vacation, I finally found a use for the Super Macro mode that the Canon Powershot S3 IS has. The super macro mode allows you to focus on objects right on the lens. This really is only useful for transparent objects, otherwise, there isn't enough light for the picture to turn out.
Slides, however, are transparent. So, what I did was I took a lightbox, placed a slide on it, turned on the super macro mode, and proceeded to place my camera directly over the slide, and took a picture. Because the slide was slightly larger than my lens, I lost some of the edges, however, the picture turned out great, and I was able to print it at 4x6, and no one could tell that it was a slide.
Now, this won't beat using a dedicated slide scanner, but it can help if you just need one or two slides digitized quickly. |

Recently got an S3 to replace my S1 (R.I.P.) and i couldn't figure out what I'd ever use the Super Macro Mode for - now I just need to find some slides... |

It's also good for spotting hairs on your lens.... |
