Hello.
Should I take picture allways in RAW in order to get the highest quality of the pictures? I have just bought nikon D80 and the program that downloards pictures on the computer doesn't see the pictures taken in RAW.
Why?
How about the temperature?
I am switching form 35 mm where I never have set temperature of the color.
Taking black and white should I set juse Automatic?
Thanks

Use raw if you have the memory to do it. To view your pics in raw use the software from your camera and then do a batch conversion.

Mac or PC?
There are a few free options available for both platforms for viewing RAW images...

The cool thing about OS X 10.4 (Tiger) is that RAW is incorporated. Opening a RAW file in iPhoto will display the image, as will most any Mac app (Preview, Aperture, etc).
iPhoto 5 (prior to OS X 10.4) will open RAW, too.
There is the Camera RAW Photoshop plugin for Mac and Windows.
dCraw-X for OSX..shareware for the full version - $15. Unregistered, it is still fully functional, but will only do 3 at a time (oh drat [/sarcasm off]).

Now, if like me, you can't afford Photoshop and use GIMP/GIMPShop (I used it on Windows, Linux and now Mac), there is UFRaw.
Quite an extensive list of supported cameras, too.
Hope That Helps :)

Hello.
Yes iPhoto recognize the camera and import thepictures.
PROBLEM. iPhoto is changing the size of the picture to 160x130 pixels.
I take pictures on D80 and the size should be big!!No>
when the camera is set to JPEG (Nine)the Large image size can be 3871x2592 pixels
When I change the forman to NEF RAW I can not select the image size .
What is the image size in RAW then?

it's not changing the size, friend. Shouldn't be, anyway.
It doesn't do that when I import to iPhoto...

Can you grab some screen shots to show that it's resizing? (Apple-Shift-3, full screen. Apple-Shift-4 to select a specific region, in case you don't know)

Grab a screenshot of it, so I can see that...
Have you used iPhoto before this?
Tried deleting the plist (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist)?

Hook your memory card or camera up to the computer, open "My Computer" on a PC or check the Desktop on a mac. Drag the image folders from the card or camera into a folder on your desktop..Do this manually, instead of using goofy programs like iphoto because they are just going to mess you up and put your images where you cant find them....Once the images are in a folder on yoru desktop use the software that CAME WITH YOUR CAMERA, or PHOTOSHOP if you have it to open and convert the RAW files.

A RAW image is a linear grayscale file of all the information captured by the sensor..it is unprocessed...All digital camera images are captured RAW and then depending on what you have your camera set to, JPEG for example, the camera computer processes the RAW image out into what you have designated. If you capture in RAW then you are telling the camera that you are going to do the processing, and you will need to process the RAW file on your computer with the camera software or another reputable RAW converter.

The RAW images will always display as a JPEG preview because a RAW file has no IMAGE, it is just grayscale information..when you process the RAW file you tell it what to look like...make sense?

A RAW file is just like a negative...it is a latent image..and it can be processed and printed in many many many different ways.

I would recomend to anyone downloading ADOBE LIGHTROOM..its a free, fully functional public beta addition..

go to labs.adobe.com dont put in the www

it has very easy import features, a totally new raw converter and processing area..easy to use editing and sorting controls...and you can apply your RAW converstion adjustments, like white balance, to any file type...jpeg, tiff, psd.

If your going to use a program to import your images from the camera to your computer Id use lightroom....but I still think everyone should do it manually...just drag the damn folder over..its not rocket science..and that way all the files are the right size, in the right place.
