I don't have a removable flash but made this effort with my camera mounted one. The flower was a little over six inches away. Settings were
ISO 100 - 1/200 sec. and f5.

It worked better than I would have thought. Take a good look at the shadow from the stamen. Note how softly defined it is. This is the mark of soft lighting--soft shadows. The relative size of the flash to the subject determines the hardness/softness of the light. Because the flash was close, it was large in relationship to the flower.

The high shutter speed and the small aperture nicely under exposes the background and gives you a good, black background.

Nicely done.

Note: A shoe mounted flash is a useful accessory.
