I would say if the image quality is anything like the D200... wait until they come out with a full frame sensor.
High ISO's yeild the worst files I have ever had to deal with. booo Nikon |

You mean D200 files? D8-0 files? Nikon files in general? What ISO?

My business partner shoots Nikon, he recently purchased a D200 as a second body. The high ISO files from the D70 are FAR superior to the D200. I am not saying Nikon isn't quality. Just cramming all these pixels on the AP-C sized sensors isn't working out. |

Interesting.
My guess is that the 5D is the best performer right now, noise-wise.

5d is certainly one of the goliaths of the digital world right now. hands down. but i do find the fujifilm s3 very interesting competitor, nice 12 megapixels, along with a large body for good handling and the closest digital has ever come to handling large highlight to shadow ranges. although the only reason i did not buy one....it has a nikon mount, booo!
and also the fact it runs on AA batt, what a mistake by fuji |

I imagine that fuji wanted to make a canon mount version as well. But my understanding is that Canon is very legalistic about their mount(s), and for this reason, Zeiss has not been able to make Canon equivalents of the ZFs they just introduced for Nikon. At least that is the story I recall reading from a Zeiss source.
In fact I have been considering (and will continue to consider) an S3. I think it's perhaps the most sensible purchase for Nikon mount right now. I wouldn't think of it as 12mp though, rather as low noise and high dynamic range 6 mp.
I have no doubt that the D200 or now the D80 will beat the S3 somewhat in terms of resolution, but the dynamic range interests me, as a film shooter. For some, though, the fps speed of the S3 would be an impediment.

I have talked to several studio shooters who absolutely love the S3. With enough light, any of the Nikon bodies will produce beautiful detailed images. But then again with enough light, a point and shoot will produce good clean images. I will stick with my Canon for the time being. The 5D is definitely a step ahead of my 1D Mark II N and 20D in terms of noise. Dynamic range will have to be the next hurdle to tackle. I am anxious to see what is to come on that front in the future. |

Until the D80 is actually available in the shops (instead of on back order of indeterminate length), comparisons with D200, D70s, 20/30D or 5D is kind of academic I guess.
BTW I thought that Nikon had ruled out going to a full frame sensor? |

I used the Fuji S3 for a couple of months on ISO 1600 a lot and i had to go looking for noise, words simply dont do it justice, im using a D70s now and i do notice some noise problems but its nothing to worry about. |

I just wish Canon use 3CCD method on their sensor. They already have this technology in their camcorder line. Sigma's new camera SD14 featuring Foveon chip is 3CCD. Probably the cost will be more, but images will be nothing short of perfect. |

I wonder what the cost of the Sigma Sd14 will be.....
3 years ago when I purchased my film Canon, I looked at the Sigma line. At the time I knew little about the company and thier products.
However, the more I read on thier technology the more convinced that they will be and are a major player in the dSLR world.
If the price is right and the resolution is major I will go with the Sigma when I make the jump to digital. |
