Ok, here's my impression of the lens after shooting with it exclusively on my camera for a long weekend trip I recently took. Keep in mind that I am a relatively new photographer, and I don't really know how to review lenses, I can only share my thoughts and experiences.
My first impression of the lens is that it was a bit heavy compared to the kit lens, and the 50mm f/1.8, which are the only other lenses I have. I bought this as a replacement for my kit lens, and I liked the extra zoom capability, the larger apertures all-around, and the macro function of the lens. Soon after I bought the lens, I also bought a handstrap from Camdapter.com, and then the weight issue didn't bother me anymore.
The Sigma 17-70 worked as a great walk-around lens on my vacation.

If you have specific questions about the lens, feel free to ask.
Also, if you want to see more photos, all of the photos in the Bay Area Trip and the Wedding of Jonas & Jona galleries in my smugmug site are taken with this lens. Let me know if you want any specific types of shots for me to take. |

These shots were taken with a Rebel XT. I would normally point to my sig, but apparently they don't show up in this forum.
Nope, it isn't a fixed aperture, it's 2.8-4.5. Sorry, should've mentioned that in my original post. And I don't think it's the EX HSM model, I don't think they have that in this focal length.
After getting used to this lens, I tried out my kit lens again since my aunt had given me a circular polarizer. I soon had this lens back on my camera though, I missed the extra reach it gave me. |
