Discussion, assignment #12. Open for posting now.

Title: Sculptural Details, Man Made objects.

We work in a 2 dimensional medium and we need to depict 3 dimensions.

Photograph a sculptural detail of a man made object. Pay particular attention to the shape, lighting, texture and color of the object. The object does NOT need to be identifiable from the image. Indeed it might be interesting to leave off that information and let the readers guess.

Examples: An automobile. You could photograph the leading edge of a side view mirror for its form. Or the intersection of a tail light and the trunk lid.

A wine bottle. You could photograph the contour of a wine bottle. Make it sensuous with good lighting.

A fire hydrant. You could bring out the texture of the castings with good lighting.

Do not limit yourself to the objects I have described. Go out with an open eye and look at details. You should see them all over the place.

This assignment does not have to be in macro mode. But you will be dealing with portions of larger objects. It should test your ability to see shape and form and judge lighting and angles.

This assignment is limited to man made objects.

The next assignment will be the same but for nature's creations instead.

It should prove to be easy to find a subject, but difficult to shoot it really well. Take your time. If the time of day that you first see the object does not have the right lighting, then come back at another time to get it.
