This weekend I had a family Bar Mitzvah to attend. I decided this would be a great time to try shooting RAW for the first time. I can not believe it took me this long to try. I think I was just intimidated because I did not know what software to use and the thought of trying to learn another photo editing program was overwhelming.

Well people here suggested Raw Shooter Essentials so that is what I used. I read through the manual and realized it was very easy to learn and not anywhere near as difficult as I thought it was going to be.

The control I now have over my photos is amazing. I am upset with myself for taking this long to take the plunge. I sort of feel like I have been driving a Ferrari in first gear because I was too intimidated to learn how to shift.

Well I am just glad I finally did it. I will never again shoot in jpg. What a world of difference!

Now I just need to worth on my other photo skills to get up to a level that I can compete with you guys. That gives me something to shoot for (no pun intended).

Is "Raw Essentials" better than using the software that comes with the Canon or Nikon package?

I feel like I have been let in on a very well known secret if that makes any sense at all.

I did not have much luck with the Nikon software, but to be fair I did not give it a lot of time and was just sort of playing with a test shot of nothing.

Raw Essentials was super easy to use. I was able to edit about 100 shots in a very short amount of time and I was able to do a lot with them.

Would it be worth purchasing, or should I just stick to Adobe CS2 and RAW essentials?[/quote]

I think Camera Raw in CS2 is best if you have it. Simply because it streamlines everything into Adobe nice and easily. That and it is a very versitile add-on.

However I have heard a lot of people that love RAW essentials so I would say give that a shot if you dont have CS2.

Yeah the only reason I am using Raw Essentials is that I have Photoshop 7.0 and am not upgrading it so I don't have access to RAW in PS right now.

Amen to that! There is no going back now that I have seen the difference between shooting in RAW and jpeg.

so what's the big deal about RAW then, apart from it being the 'in' thing?

You haven't shot in RAW?

Until then you will not see the difference
Better Image and more control

Nope never. Heard about it obviously.

What are the practical advantages?
