After seeing that Nikon wanted about $200+ for a plastic lens shade for my 70-200 2.8 AF lens, the salesperson recommended that I buy a quart of yogurt in a plastic tub, cut out the bottom and fit it to the lens.

I used black electical tape to wrap it inside and out but the tech told me he used black spray paint.

It works like a charm and gave me a 5 inch shade for about 1.79

Cool idea and thanks for posting the technique.

Which lens hood was the salesperson talking about? I found a bayonet hood on B&H to fit a 70-200 f/2.8 for $30

It was a longer lens shade for the older 70-200. Not sure which one of if he even really looked much. He just said "That one will cost you around $200 so why don't you try this..."

Hope the info helps save some people some cash that we would all rather spend on prints.

if it works, good. I would think there were some cheaper options on EBay.

Cheaper than $1.99? I would think postage would be more than that.

For me, I wasn't looking to spend more than $20 so this was a great option that took 20 minutes to make.

That's what I thought too ... maybe the sale person was giving me a line of bull ... still, I liked the suggestion and it gave me a quick solution I was looking for.

Hi all,

This is my first post on this forum...

Anyway - I found this http://www.lenshoods.co.uk/ a while ago - basically it has templates for you to print & cut out your own lens hoods. - A bit of black spray paint finishes it off nicely and hey presto!! A free lens hood.
