From what I have read Mike, the D70's will be upgraded through a software patch that will make them the same camera as the new D70s |

Yeah, after asking the question, I have seen that, too.
Oh well, where there's life, eh...

Too early to tell, Jonathan. Same goes for the D50. |

Be interested to see the bottom - I'm interested to know if they put any contacts on for a vert grip this time round! |

Nope, no vertical grip! I just don't get why they don't make one for the D70. It's such a great camera, why not give us a grip for it! |

They can't.
Nikon decided to leave the contacts on the base of the camera out when they designed the D70. As a result any grip you get isn't going to work properly...
Shame though. |

Sorry, I should have phrased that differently. I know they can't make a real one now because there are no contacts for it. I don't get why they didn't put them there in the first place. Seems like a large majority of professionals and amateurs like having a vertical grip.
Oh well, one more reason to buy another camera. lol Hey, you suppose that's why they didn't make one? So we'd have another reason to buy more of their stuff? Darn those marketing people!! |

I think a replacement for the D100 is long overdue. Perhaps then we'll have an alternative to going all the way up to a D2X? I really don't understand why Nikon didn't make a grip available for the D70s. |

That's a great point Shaun. It sure would be nice to have something available at less than $5000. I personally am not in "need" of upgrading, but lots of people are and I think they're waiting for a replacement to the D100, like you said.
You never know what they're working on, but I would hope it's coming soon. I'd love to see maybe 8-12 megapixel, ISO 100, vert grip, mirror lock-up...just off the top of my head. Maybe late this year we'll hear something? |

No, neither am I. The D70 will last me quite a while yet. The D70 in many regards replaced the D100, by not making the grip available, they tried to class the D70 as an 'entry' level dslr. It's all marketing & sales tactics... It only makes sense for them to introduce a mid range model that lies between the D70 & the D2X in specs & features. I'd say it'll be an 8mp. |

Just wait... I reckon that in late summer/early autumn we'll see a D200 (or something like that) being released... Something along the lines of the Canon 20D in terms of price/specs. |

I hope so, and if they know what's good for them, Nikon will put out a camera that's better, spec wise, than the 20D. They've gotta have a reason for people to go Nikon and not Canon. If it's got fewer megapixels and not as many features, it won't help them at all. There's gotta be an incentive somewhere besides just liking one brand over another. |
