I thought Canon USA's manufacturing was U.S. based. Am I wrong? If their product is at least packaged in the U.S. then they stand to profit by the dollar. I guess that applies to any of the foreign-owned companies. |
I don't know if Canons are made in the US or not.

You have medium format gear, right? The dgital backs are becoming affordable. These all-in-one systems strike me as ludicrous, given that you can get some very good digital backs for under $10k. My grand plan is to put a scanning back on my RB. New 16 mp scanning backs are already down around $6k. That's pocket change ;)

I sold my 25-year-old Hasselblad with 45º pentaprism; Polaroid, A12, and A24 backs; Pro Shade; and 80mm and 150mm lenses about two or three years ago. I was not photographing weddings any more, and had a few bucks tied up in it. So, for about $4500, I let two pro photographers take it off my hands.
I do have the Zeiss Ikonta B 6x6 that was made in 1938, but I don't use it. |

Fellas, while we are in this topic, allow me to forward a question to everyone.
At what price point do you think will you buy into a 12MP digital back-module for our 35mm Nikons and Canons?
As you can see, this issue really titilates my imagination because I have so much invested in my Nikons and I know I am only one of maybe millions. I really don't want to part with any of these stuff and I am so ready to buy into the Nikon D2X or whatever is coming...like a D90, ( I wish), with a reasonably priced full frame CMOS sensor.
I still have, my Nikon F Photomic, Nikon F3T w/MD, N90S, N70, to which I could use the ff: AF(D)lenses, 50mmf1.4, 85mmf1.8, 105mmf2.8, 60mmf2.8 macro, 20mm, 24-120mm, 80-200f2.8, 2xtube, SB16, SB25, SB26 flashes. (can't recall the f stops of the rest.)
Thank you in advance for your inputs. |

salvoshoots, that's a very good question. I would easily pay $1000, or maybe even $2000, for one for my F100, if it had a full size, 12MP CMOS sensor. I don't understand why Nikon doesn't make one with a full-size sensor. They don't even make one with a CMOS sensor, do they? |

Nikon uses some CMOS sensors, but no full-frame ones.
Apparently Nikon has permanently kissed away the full frame digital market, which I find very annoying. From a business standpoint, it may indeed be wise. It makes sport & wildlife people very happy, and they are probably the bulk of the market. Also if everyone thinks they have to buy DX lenses, it is good business....
Salvo, if you want a digiback for a 35mm SLR, your best option is the Leica modul R. The R8 and R9 bodies & associated lenses are excellent anyway. In fact, if the lenses weren't quite so hideously expensive, I would consider that. But look, you can get a nikon 9000 film scanner for well under $2k and get excellent results from your F100. Annoying workflow- yes. Excellent results though.
As for my F100, I personally would not pay to have a digiback attached, it would be at least $5k. I would pay $5k to put a digital back on one of my medium format cameras though. My dream combination is a mamiya 6 or 7 rangefinder with a digital back. That would be absurdly cool.
